Back in good old 1987 I asked
Mum (aka
Janet Madden) if she could
help out with our school
swimming lessons.
Being the amazing super Mum that
she is, her reply was "no
chance, Friday is bridge day".
Only kidding (sorry Mum), she of
course agreed to come down and
give the teachers a hand at our
local swimming baths, the Centre
Pool in Slough.
Mum had taught lessons
previously and was also a very
accomplished diver and
synchronised swimmer (she even
appeared in a
music video). Although she
wasn't prepared for the rabble
that was year 8 at St.
Anthony's, she did know how to
organise us and her teaching
skills soon made an impression. |

Soon parents were asking Mum
if she would give private
swimming lessons outside of
school lessons. Her
entrepreneurial instincts kicked
in and she realised that, other
than learning to swim at school
or the local sports centre,
there were no private swimming
schools in the area.

So in 1990, Mum hired some pool
time at Beechwood School in
Slough and J.M. Swimming Schools
was born.
Flyers were printed up and
handed out at local schools,
shops and high streets. Phill
and I particularly enjoyed
giving out leaflets in Slough
high street which did wanders
for our street cred, payment was
a Big Mac and fries so it wasn't
all bad.
Mum's mix of small classes,
personal service and a caring,
fun approach soon won many loyal
customers and the business
started to grow.
Today, Seriously FUN help many
babies, children, young adults
and parents enjoy the water and
learn essential swimming and
lifesaving skills.
